Now that HP has an updated universal printer driver for the 2420 (6/19), I decided to give it a shot. I bought in my now retired Dell Laptop and plug the printer with USB to the Dell. Without uninstalling the old printer, I downloaded the new UPD for XP in the Dell and tried to install it. But the Dell don't even recognize the printer with Plug and Play. I tried manually install it and it asked me which port. It gave me choices of LPT1:, LPT2: etc, USB1, USB2, etc. And other Com1, Com2, etc.
The DOT4 was taken up by the old installation that I had not removed. I tried assigning USB1 as the port and it said it was installed successfully.
HP LaserJet 2420n Driver: HP LaserJet 2420n Printer Driver is not a software upgrade. It is full software solution for your printer. If a prior version software is currently installed, it must be uninstalled before installing this version. 2017 HP Windows 10 Theme by Colorlib Powered by WordPress. Download HP LaserJet 2420 Printer Drivers for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista and XP 64 bit & 32 bit, fix HP LaserJet 2420 Printer drivers problem. Just download it.
But when I did a test print, nothing comes out. The quene held the print job with Error. And when I went to the new Win8 Laptop and tried to install it (after downloading the new UPD for Win8 64x), again, same problem like before.
It doesn't recognized it. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to uninstall the previous printer first? I got it solved. Spent another 2-3 hours today, retracing different options and finally figured out the one that works.
But I have to say, HP is not making it easy. It is one of the very complicated process.
Here's is how. On the XP machine:. Delete old printer setup, if there is one.
Hook up HPLJ with USB to XP. Do not do Automatic install.
If it does, delete it because it doesn't work. Download new UPD drivers from HP site.
Do not let the auto install run because it doesn't work. From the new UPD driver folder, run Install. Select Tranditional setup. Local Printer (uncheck Plug & Play, because it will not find the printer). Select USB1 as port ##.
Choose the Universal driver on the top (Not the one with Version 5.6.5). Check Replace existing driver. Click Finish and it will copy the files to Windows System Directory. When finished, go to printer Properties and change the port to a free DOT4.
Change Advance setting. From the Win8 machine, add the new printer. The auto install will install the dynamic mode which I was not able to assign a printer to it ## USB1 will work if I don't switch it back to DOT4 The parts that really threw me off are. Why auto install (Found new equipment) do work (it will install the printer, but it is not a good install). It installed the Dynamic Mode that I was not able to assign a printer to it. Why there are two drivers (step 8) to choose and the one with Version 5.6.5 (the newest one) would not work. Here is another weird thing.
After the successful install, in the new printer's properties, it said it is using driver version 5.6.5.15717 3. Why I have to choose USB1 as port and then change it to DOT4 later. But it will not directly install it to DOT4 Also, I have another 2420 printer runining the old version of UPD.
I don't have to do anything with it and it works the same after I install the new 2420. With that, I guess I had resolved all my issue with the Windows 8. Let's hope MS is not going to f@#k it up in Windows 8.1. Wrote: I don't know if we are doing a wild goose chase. According to the following link, the laserjet 2420 (the 2000 series?) is not supported. I assume that laserject 2000 series includes my 2420.
No, yours is a 2400 series and yes it is supported. Scroll down to your model number, little beyond halfway down the page. Notes are all the way down at the bottom of the page. That link 'win 8 HP printer support', it shows your model '2420' as supported and exactly how it is supported.
PC and tablet via USB or network support and offers UPD = 'Universal printer driver' for easy print sharing to point out what it states. I think your instinct that the UPD is not working because it is not compatible with your settup is correct: however; not because the UPD does not support the printer - specifications tab for the UPD- states the following - under Operating Systems Supported: Client operating systems supported:. Microsoft Windows 8, Pro, Enterprise; 32 and 64 bit. Note: UPD Dynamic Mode printing from Windows Store apps is not supported. To print from Windows Store apps, create a permanent instance printer.
note the difference in how Win 7 is listed:. Microsoft Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate; 32 and 64 bit.
Unclear without going back and re-reading everything.but. Xp pro wont default set up domains.and you are trying to start an active directory print server.might be required settings for active directory somewhere in there? Suggest make sure checking if necessary windows components are installed- Add or remove/windows components IF you find any are required to get this working in XP pro and, I think the UPD default installs as a client version on home versions, that can join but not create active directories.needs more research. Wrote: I am really frustrated now.
In the XP laptop, I went to Add/Remove to remove the old HP installation. I delete the printer from the printer folder. Downloaded the new Universal driver and it tried to install.
It recognized the printer, but it could not find the driver. It is looking for the HPC24c06.GP file but it is not in the system. I even tried to run update and it still would not work. Now I can't even install the printer to the XP laptop. Aha I see I didn't explain the UPD correctly, has to do with multiple printers supported using single driver rather than systems accessing them, sorry if added to confusion with that. Should have read more than the first paragraph assuming rest!.heck my way made more sense to me! It is after all a workgroup printer.
Where is it looking for HPC24c06.GP and what driver did you download for XP? I am sorry if I sound frustrated because I am.
Installing a printer, which I had done over hundreds of times, should not be this difficult. I got really confused when Gem was talking about client side and server side installation.
I have a simple network where I have a router hooked up to the cable modem. I have a few machines hooked up, wired or wireless, to the router. I have a XP machine that I want to hook up a HPLJ 2420 and I want the other machines to be able to send print queues thru the network (as described above). I was doing just that when all my machines were on XP3. I have some new development which accounts for Good News/Bad News. I don't know what I had done (I was trying a lot of things), but I found that there are two installation of the 2420 in the XP's Printer and Fax folder.
One of them was hooked up to DOT4. I was able to send a test print successfully. (I am going to come back and talk about the 2nd one.). I went to the Win8 laptop, and surprisingly, I was able to connect to the XP's 2420 and send a test print. Everything works the way it should, except I don't know what I have done to get to this result. So, I went to the XP and deleted the two 2420 from the Printer and Fax folder. It seems that if I plug the 2420 to the USB port and reboot the machine, it will reinstall the two printers in the Printer and Fax folder.
But at this point, if I tried to right click on any one of the 2420, it open up a pop up to ask me to identify a printer. I was not able to find the 2420. When I entered the ip address (which I copied down before), it doesn't recognize it. (This is the problem I encoutered in the 2nd one.).
One more thing I am going try (I ran out of time today), is that I am going to restart the machine at this point and see if it will associate the 2420 to one of the printers in the folder. Well, any comment will be appreciated.
You really should not have deleted both of them you had it working, it stated if ended up with more than one copy installed to simply remove the second copy, the copy not marked as default. Or in your case whichever one wasn't used for the test marked 'default' or not. Shouldn't be any problem getting back to that point again, shouldn't be. Simply reinstall the driver again setting that printer as the default printer.
If result in two copies again just delete the driver not marked 'Default'. If you have port issues, you shouldn't but if you do under properties for that printer you can toggle port its assigned to until hit on the one that works. I have that issue with a dot matrix printer and win 7, its hit/miss when installed. Keep in mind its not installed as a Panasonic (its a Panasonic printer) but its installed as a Epsom using the Epsom driver. Its connected via an adapter and a virtual printer port, little more involved than a simple direct USB connection!
Not always but at times I have to manually toggle ports to get it to connect and work, just wanted to mention not a big deal if find it necessary, it shouldn't be in your case no but if do switching port assigned to one quick/easy. And you'd only have to do so one time, once set there would be no need or reason to change it unless perhaps if you change USB port on the computer and it doesn't automatically follow as it should. The last thing you were talking about doing was installing the UDP on the XP machine: you likely got 2 entries just from that install: one physical entry for the XP machine, and one virtual entry for the UDP to network.I wouldn't worry about deleting either unless you get problems printing from either still causing problems! I believe end up with the second entry for printers in vista/win 7 and 8 is due to how the printer is removed. I see it often myself.
Removing a printer from Devices and printers does just that, right clicking clicking on 'remove' removes the entry nothing more. When reinstall that same printer via the 'add a printer' wizard you will be asked (and my wording might not be exact) 'Drivers for this printer are already installed, use those or install those selected' then given option to check 'use existing xxxxx', tic that box to use the driver already installed, or leave box un tic'd to new driver.
When tic box to use the existing driver the end result is a single entry for said printer under 'Device and printers' ('Printers and faxes' in XP). Do not tic that box installing new driver results in two entries showing for that same printer, one for the previous install and a second for the new install for same printer. And no removing that second entry or leaving in place makes no difference, won't hurt anything. Unless user has done something they both do work, say user changed USB port or channged it that could render the original entry no longer functioning.
I know I UPD has nothing to do with that in my case as my printers while are HP (3 of them) do not support the universal print driver series, not offered not an option. My printers are all of the basic home type and not business class models such as the OP is working with here. Anyway I believe that is the reason the OP in reinstalling the printer that results in dual entries rather than one for it, when the 'add a printer' option is used. When using a setup disk any existing/previous driver versions are removed before setup continues, its a non issue going that way.
XP same as win 7 will remove the entry but does not offer to remove all associated driver/files doing so, the entry for the device is simply removed from the menu leaving the drivers and DLL's?
